모쉐가 놋뱀을 만들어 깃발 위에 달았다. 그 뱀이 사람을 물었을 때 그 사람이 그 놋뱀을 쳐다보면 살아났다.

광야에서(민수기)21장 9절
그는 산당들을 제거하고 석상들을 부수고 아쉐라 상을 잘랐다.
그리고 모쉐가 만든 놋뱀을 산산조각 내었다.
이는 그날들까지도 이스라엘 자손이 그것에 분향하며 그것을 네후쉬탄('놋'-'네호쉩','뱀'-'나하쉬' 합성어)이라고 불렀기 때문이었다.
הוא הסיר את הבמות ושבר את המצבת וכרת את האשרה וכתת נחש הנחשת אשר עשה משה כי עד הימים ההמה היו בני ישראל מקטרים לו ויקרא לו נחשתן
왕들하(열왕기하)18장 4절
1.네게브에 사는 크나안인 아랃 왕은 이스라엘이 아타림 길로 오고 있다는 것을 들었다.
그가 이스라엘과 싸워서 그 가운데 얼마를 포로로 잡았다.
2.이스라엘이 (YHUH)יהוה께 서원을 말하였다.
"만일 당신께서 제 손에 이 백성을 정녕 주신다면 저는 그들의 성(城)들을 전멸시키겠습니다."
3.(YHUH)יהוה께서 이스라엘의 소리를 들으시고 크나안인을 주셔서 이스라엘은 그들과 그들의 성들을 전멸시켰다.
그래서 그곳의 이름을 호르마라고 불렀다.
4.그들은 호르 산으로부터 숲 바닷길로 에돔 땅을 돌아서 이동하였다. 그 백성 자신이 그 길에서 견디지 못하고
5.그 백성이 하나님과 모쉐에게 말하였다. "왜 당신들은 미쯔라임에서 우리를 올라오게 하여 이 광야에서 죽게 합니까?
빵도 없고 물도 없고 우리 자신이 이 시시한 음식에 진저리가 납니다."
6.(YHUH)יהוה께서 불뱀들을 그 백성 안에 보내셔서 그것들이 그 백성을 물어 많은 백성이 이스라엘 중에서 죽었다.
7.그 백성이 모쉐에게 와서 말하였다. "우리가 죄지었습니다. 왜냐하면, 우리가 (YHUH)יהוה와 당신에게 대항하여 말했기 때문입니다. (YHUH)יהוה께 기도하셔서 이 뱀을 우리에게서 치워주십시오." 모쉐가 그 백성을 위하여 기도하였다.
8.(YHUH)יהוה께서 모쉐에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 불뱀을 만들어 깃발 위에 달아라. 물린 모든 자가 그것을 보면 살 것이다."
9.모쉐가 놋뱀을 만들어 깃발 위에 달았다. 그 뱀이 사람을 물었을 때 그 사람이 그 놋뱀을 쳐다보면 살아났다.
10.이스라엘 자손이 이동하여 오봍에서 진을 쳤다.
11.그리고 그들은 오봍에서 이동하여 해 뜨는 곳 모압 앞쪽 광야에 있는 이예하아바림에서 진을 쳤다.
12.거기에서 그들은 이동하여 제렏 와디에서 진을 쳤다.
13.거기에서 그들은 이동하여 에모리 경계 바깥쪽 광야에 있는 아르논 건너편에 진을 쳤다. 왜냐하면, 아르논은 모압과 에모리 사이에 있는 모압의 경계이기 때문이었다.
14.그러므로 (YHUH)יהוה의 전쟁들의 책에서 이렇게 전해진다. "수파에 있는 봐헵과 아르논 와디들과
15.그 와디들의 비탈은 아르 마을로 뻗어있고 모압 경계에 기대고 있다."
16.거기에서 브에르로 갔다. 그곳은 (YHUH)יהוה께서 모쉐에게 '그 백성을 모아라. 내가 그들에게 물을 줄 것이다.'라고 하신 그 브에르다.
17.그때 이스라엘이 이 노래를 불렀다. "우물물아, 올라오너라 우물물을 위하여 화답하여라.
18.그 우물은 고관들이 팠고 그 백성의 귀인들이 뚫었다, 통치자의 지팡이와 그들의 지팡이로." 그들은 광야에서 맡타나로,
19.맡타나에서 나할리엘로, 나할리엘에서 바뫁으로,
20.바뫁에서 피스가 꼭대기 곧 예쉬몬이 내려다보이는 모압 들에 있는 골짜기로 갔다.
21.이스라엘이 에모리 왕 시혼에게 사신들을 보내어 말하였다.
22."내가 당신의 땅을 좀 지나가게 해주십시오. 우리가 밭으로나 포도원으로 치우치지 않고 우물물도 마시지 않을 것입니다.
우리는 당신의 경계를 지날 때까지 '왕의 길'로만 갈 것입니다."
23.시혼 왕은 이스라엘이 자기 경계로 지나가게 하지 않았다. 그리고 시혼은 그의 모든 백성을 모아서 이스라엘을 맞으러 광야로 나가 야하쯔로 가서 이스라엘과 싸웠다.
24.이스라엘이 칼로 그를 쳐서 그의 땅을 아르논에서부터 얍봌 곧 암몬 자손의 경계 입구까지만 차지하였다.
왜냐하면, 암몬 자손의 경계는 강하였기 때문이었다.
25.이스라엘이 이 모든 성을 취하였다. 그리고 이스라엘은 에모리의 모든 성 곧 헤쉬본과 그곳의 주변 모든 마을에서 살았다.
26.왜냐하면, 헤쉬본은 에모리 왕 시혼의 성이며, 시혼은 모압의 이전 왕과 싸워 그의 모든 땅을 그의 손으로부터 아르논까지 취하였기 때문이었다.
27.그러므로 시인들이 이렇게 읊었다. "헤쉬본으로 오너라. 시혼의 성이 지어지고 굳건해지게 하여라.
28.이는 헤쉬본에서 불이 나오고 시혼의 성읍에서 불꽃이 나와서 모압의 아르를 삼키고 아르논 산당 주인들을 삼켰기 때문이다.
29.아, 네게 화로다! 모압아. 크모쉬의 백성아, 너는 망했다. 그가 자기 아들들을 도망자들이 되게 했고, 자기 딸들을 에모리 왕 시혼의 포로가 되게 했다.
30.우리가 그들을 쏘아서 헤쉬본부터 디본까지 망하게 했고 우리가 노파흐까지 메드바까지 황폐하게 했다."
31.그래서 이스라엘이 에모리 땅에 살았다.
32.모쉐가 야제르를 정탐하려고 사람을 보내니 그들이 그곳의 주변 마을들(직역-그곳의 딸들을)을 점령하고 거기에 있는 에모리인들을 쫓아내었다.
33.그들이 돌이켜 바샨 길로 올라가니 바샨 왕 옥이 그들을 맞으러 나왔다. 그와 그의 모든 백성이 에드레이로 전쟁하려고 나왔다.
34.(YHUH)יהוה께서 모쉐에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 그를 두려워하지 마라. 왜냐하면, 네 손에 내가 그와 그의 모든 백성과 땅을 주었기 때문이다. 너는 네가 헤쉬본에 사는 에모리 왕 시혼에게 행한 것처럼 그에게 행하여라."
35.그래서 그들이 생존자가 남지 않았을 때까지 그와 그의 아들들과 그의 모든 백성을 쳐서 그의 땅을 차지하였다.
광야에서(민수기)21장
¶ WHEN the Canaanite, the king of Gadar:
who dwelled in the south, heard that Israel came by the way of the spies, then he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoners.
And Israel vowed a vow to Yahveh and said:
If thou wilt surely deliver this people into our hands, then we will utterly destroy their cities.
And Yahveh hearkened to the voice of Israel,
and delivered up the Canaanites into their hands,
and they utterly destroyed them and their cities,
and they called the name of that place Hirmah.
¶ And they journeyed from mount Hor
by the way of the Red Sea,
to go around the land of Edom,
and the people were much distressed
because of the way.
And the people murmured:
against God and against Moses, saying:
Why have you brought us up out of Egypt
to die in the wilderness ?
For neither is there bread, nor water,
and our soul is wearied with this inferior bread (manna).
And Yahveh sent fiery serpents against the
people, and they bit the people, so that many
people of Israel died.
Therefore the people came to Moses,
and said to him: — we have sinned,
for we have murmured against Yahveh and against you,
pray before Yahveh,
that He take the serpents away from us.
And Moses prayed for the people.
And Yahveh said to Moses:
Make a fiery serpent of brass,
and set it upon a pole,
and it shall come to pass that every one
who is bitten by a serpent,
when he looks upon it, shall live.
So Moses made a serpent of brass,
and put it upon a pole,
and it came to pass that if a serpent
had bitten any man, when he beheld the
serpent of brass, he lived.
¶ And the children of Israel journeyed,
and encamped in Aboth.
And they journeyed from Aboth,
and encamped at the Een di Ebraye (the
spring of the Hebrews), in the wilderness
which is before Moab,
to the east toward the sunrise.
From thence they journeyed,
and encamped in the valley of Zared.
From thence they journeyed,
and encamped on the other side of Arnon,
which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorites,
for Arnon is the border of Moab,
between Moab and the Amorites.
Wherefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of Yahveh: a flame of fire is in the whirlwind and in the river of Arnon:
And he made straight the slope of the valleys which extended to the site of Ad, which lies over the border of Moab.
And there is the Bera,
that is, the well of which Yahveh said to Moses, Gather the people together
and I will give them water.
Then Israel sang this song:
Spring up, O well,
sing ye to it:
The well which the princes dug,
which the nobles of the people uncovered
and searched out with their staves.
And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah (gift).
And from Mattanah (gift) to Nahaliel,
and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
And from Bamoth in the valley,
which is in the country of Moab,
to the top of the hill which looks toward
Ashimon (the desert).
¶ And Israel sent messengers to Sihon,
king of the Amorites, saying:
Let us pass through your land,
we will not turn aside into the fields
or into the vineyards,
we will not drink water from the wells,
but we will go along by the king’s highway,
until we have passed through your borders.
And Sihon would not let Israel
pass through his borders,
but Sihon gathered all his army together,
and went out against Israel into the wilderness,
and he came to Jahaz
and fought against Israel.
And Israel:
smote him with the edge
of the sword,
and possessed his land
from Arnon to Jabbok,
and as far as the border
of the children of Ammon,
for the border of the children
of Ammon was fortified.
And Israel took all those cities,
and Israel settled
in all the cities of the Amorites,
in Heshbon
and in all the villages thereof.
For Heshbon
was the capital city of Sihon
the king of the Amorites,
who had fought
against the former king of Moab
and taken all his land
out of his hand as far as Arnon.
Wherefore they say in the (proverbs):
Come into Heshbon,
let the city of Sihon,
be built and prepared:
For a fire has gone out of Heshbon,
a flame from the city of Sihon.
It has consumed Ad of Moab,
and the worshippers of the high places of Arnon.
Woe to you, O Arnon !
Woe to you, O Moab !
You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh:
he has given his sons hostages,
and his daughters into captivity,
to Sihon king of the Amorites.
The fields of Heshbon
have perished as far as Ribon,
and have been laid waste as far as Lanhakh,
which is in the wilderness.
Thus Israel:
dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer,
and they captured its villages,
and destroyed the Amorites that were there.
And they turned
and went up to the land of Mathnin,
and Og the king of Mathnin
went out against them,
he and all his people,
to the battle at Ardai.
And Yahveh said to Moses:
Fear him not !
for I will deliver him into your hands,
and all his people and his country,
and you shall do to him:
As you did to Sihon king of the Amorites,
who dwelt in Heshbon.
So they smote him
and his sons
and all his people
until there was not a survivor left to him,
and they possessed his land.
